Tune by Mozaiklabs, the Roon alternative
A multi-room music server you run at home, compared plainly with Roon: what Tune does, what it does not do yet, and what Roon does better.
Tune by Mozaiklabs is a multi-room music server you run at home: on a Mac, a PC, a NAS, a Raspberry Pi or a mini-PC running Tune OS. It brings your library (FLAC, DSD…) and your streaming services (Qobuz, TIDAL, Deezer) together, then plays to the devices on your network.
Roon is the reference in this field. This page compares the two plainly: what Tune does, what it does not do yet, and what Roon does better.

What Tune brings
- It controls the DLNA/UPnP and OpenHome devices you already own, with no certification to wait for from their maker.
- Deezer comes on top of Qobuz and TIDAL, in the same search as your local library.
- A free version with no time limit, and a 349 EUR lifetime Premium.
- Readable source code (BSL 1.1) and an open network protocol, OAAT, under Apache 2.0.
- It runs in Docker, on a Raspberry Pi or on a mini-PC with Tune OS, and is controlled from a plain web browser.
What Roon does better today
- Metadata and discovery: artist pages, credits, links between works, Roon Radio.
- The Roon Ready ecosystem: many devices certified by their makers.
- Mature control apps on every platform.
- Roon ARC, to listen to your library away from home on a phone.
- A complete DSP engine: convolution, upsampling, equaliser.
- Years of use by a large community: stable, well-documented software.
Tune's limits, stated plainly
- Tune 1.0.0 is a release candidate: bugs remain, tracked in public on the forum.
- The iOS and Android apps are in beta (TestFlight on iOS).
- Spotify is experimental; Apple Music plays only on iPhone and iPad (Tune Remote app, beta), not on the server's zones; Sonos is not supported.
- The list of verified devices is still short: Eversolo, HiFi Rose and Lindemann.
- More than 3 zones, and synchronised multi-room, need Tune Premium.
- A small team: support goes through the forum and e-mail.
What about other software?
Lyrion Music Server (formerly Logitech Media Server)
Free, open-source software built around Squeezebox and Squeezelite players, extended by plugins. Tune has a built-in SlimProto server: Squeezelite players connect to it directly.
Audirvana
Paid audio player for macOS and Windows that plays your library and streaming services to a local output or a network device. It targets listening from a computer rather than a multi-room setup.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Tune by Mozaiklabs free?
- Yes. Tune Free costs nothing, with no time limit, for up to 3 playback zones. Tune Premium (€7.99 a month, €69.99 a year or 349 EUR lifetime) adds unlimited zones, synchronised multi-room and priority support.
- Is Tune open source?
- No: Tune is source-available, under the Business Source License 1.1 (BSL 1.1). The server code is public on GitHub; personal non-commercial use is allowed, commercial use needs a licence. Each release becomes Apache 2.0 four years after it is published. The OAAT protocol itself is Apache 2.0.
- Do my Roon Ready devices work with Tune?
- Tune does not speak RAAT, Roon's proprietary protocol. If your device also accepts UPnP/DLNA, OpenHome, AirPlay, Chromecast or Squeezelite, Tune controls it through that protocol.
- Can I keep Roon and try Tune?
- Yes. Tune installs alongside Roon, on the same machine or another one, and can index the same music folders.
- Which platforms does Tune run on?
- The server runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and Docker, or on Tune OS (x86_64 mini-PCs, Raspberry Pi 4 and 5). It is controlled from a web browser, or with the Tune Remote apps for iOS and Android, in beta.
- Does Tune play DSD and high resolution?
- Yes: DSF, DFF and SACD ISO images, native DSD to renderers that accept it, DoP to PCM interfaces, conversion to PCM otherwise. Qobuz and TIDAL play in high-resolution FLAC, bit-perfect when the device accepts the source format.
